Balboa City School

Balboa City School Young Entrepreneurs

Five high school students from BCS have been accepted into the TYE young entrepreneurs program. This is part of The IndUS Entrepreneurs (TIE) outreach to the high school students. TIE has grown to be the world’s largest not for profit organization for entrepreneurs. Only thirty students in all of San Diego have been admitted to TYE and Balboa City School has five slots!

Our students will be studying with successful entrepreneurs and industry leaders chosen from within TIE.

Students will participate in 14 classes and workshops hosted every other Saturday from October 16 until April, 2011. Topics will range from Marketing to Finance, Business Law to Business Models as well as participate in several business plan workshops. The students will work as teams to create a business plan for their entrepreneurial idea which they will present in a local competition among the other participants with a total of $8,500 dollars in potential prize money. The winning team will present in a global competition for more prize money and recognition for their achievement.

Participants connect with each other, building strong friendships and have a chance to be mentored by business and industry leaders. They will be exposed to the amazing world of business innovation and creativity!

Balboa City School students are again proving that despite our small size they can and do compete at any level. Among their many other accomplishments, students have become; National Merit Scholars, book authors, economists, filmmakers, founders of non-profits, military officers and highly decorated athletes.

Our students will be meeting with professors every other Saturday, to study business at the college level, and with the ultimate goal of creating an original business plan to enter into the local and the national TYE contest. These meetings will continue through April 2011. If they win their business will be funded! Since there is no lack of creativity at Balboa City School we have a great opportunity to show what we can do in this competition.

Our goal is not just to compete but to win at the local, national and international level. Our students have their work cut out for them and they know this. We want to use this opportunity to teach students: That hard work and perseverance can conquer just about anything; That there is no short cut to quality; That any “liability” whether personal, economic, or community based, can be transformed into an asset and that, in fact, is what creates successful people and societies.
