Balboa City School

Balboa School Summer 2011

Balboa City School will once again be offering summer programs for both the lower division (grades K-6) and the upper division (grades 7-12). Students need not be enrolled in the regular school year program to attend summer school at Balboa City School.

All students benefit from something to do over the summer. This structured day program offers them the opportunity to continue to make progress at a time when they might otherwise slip behind. Our warm, personal environment assures success and fosters mastery for a broad range of ability levels. No homework is assigned.

A lot can be accomplished in just six weeks at the Balboa City School (BCS) WASC accredited summer school program. In addition to maintaining school-year momentum, students can polish their skills, get a head start on the fall semester, and in some cases earn a full year of credit in English and/or mathematics.

The BCS summer program offer instruction from 8am to 12pm daily (after school program for K-8 is available). Essential subjects such as English and math are taught in the first half of the morning. The second half of the morning is dedicated to fun; activity based learning. And, during the summer, there are no homework assignments.

For kindergarten through 6th grade students, the BCS summer activity based programs are designed to not only engage the mind but to teach social and team building skills. Programs such as chess camp and lego robotics teach young children that they can learn seemingly complicated processes and have fun doing so.

For upper school students grades 7 through 12, students of all levels and abilities, can strengthen their skills and improve their changes of moving on to college. From basic math to calculus and from core writing to English literature, BCS can help where students need it the most. The activity based learning is designed to engage students to think at a higher intellectual level while also reinforcing the notion that learning can be fun. Students learn Shakespeare the way he was meant to be learned: by going to plays at the Old Globe Theater. Multi-Media and video production is always a highlight of the program for all students. And, the SAT prep course is a big plus for high school students. Finally, summer school students have the opportunity to apply for paid and non-paid positions through our internship program, which is supported by the La Jolla Learning Foundation (please note that a limited number of internships are available).

Summer school is often the key to continued academic success for all students. It is a crucial lynch pin in solidifying student accomplishment and moving forward with confidence into the new year. So, make the most of this summer. For more information call 619-298-2990 ext. 208.
